I'm sitting on one of three tree stumps more than a metre thick that the sea has washed up on the sand. It's good to have a tree behind me. It provides support and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No tree lives alone <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In New Zealand, there are kauri trees that - like the redwoods - can live for up to 4000 years. Their roots - like the 2000 year old Tane Mahuta<\/em> well over 100 metres. Surprisingly, they do not go very deep into the ground. For a large kauri to stand securely, it needs the weight of other trees to support it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, this was an image of relationships in friendship and family. The living people in my immediate and wider environment strengthen and hold me together. And when one of your comrades dies, it affects your own stability. You don't immediately fall over with them, but the shock and the loss of some stability, shade and nourishment is painfully palpable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My journey began with the news that long-time friends of mine, Chris and Susanna Naylor<\/a>together with Melinda Harris, co-founder of the nature conservation organisation A Rocha<\/a> one died in a tragic road accident. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had known Susanna for 34 years. She was a tree in my neighbourhood that gave me support with her example, her care and her prayers. I didn't know Chris that well, but his love for creation, especially the birds, inspired and infected me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After her death, I first used the image of a cliff that had broken off in my life to describe the loss. But then I heard about the tree families and thought: that expresses it better. They gave me support, shade from the wind, encouragement - and hopefully I gave them the same. And we were witnesses to each other's lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where there was room for them in my life, there will eventually be room for other trees, new relationships that grow and stabilise in their own way. They will be different and will not be able to replace them. But they will also nourish and strengthen me and I them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When trees die, they pass on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a national park, I sat down under the shade of a large kauri tree to mourn the loss of my friends, write in my diary and pray. I watched the birds that Chris loved so much and wrote down memories. I grieved and thought of Sam, Chloe and Josh - I can only imagine what the loss means for their three children...what they will miss. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as I was pondering my thoughts, a man played the recording on an information board in my immediate vicinity. \"When a large tree dies and falls down, it continues to give off nutrients to birds and insects for about 100 years.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"That's also true about great people,\" I thought. \"Even when they are gone, they continue to nourish.\" I thought of Chris' book, which makes love for creation and for people great and which will continue to have an effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagined the children thinking about what Susanna or Chris would have done in difficult situations. Or how the memory of love, the shared moments and all the beauty strengthens them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large tree nourishes the environment for another 100 years. So does a great person. <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
