Without order and structure, life becomes unstable. Clear structures organise life. This provides a secure framework. For me, this is primarily associated with clarity and security.

There are many good reasons for a tidy life. I have been looking for ways to make life easier for myself and others. Because:

Tidiness gives you more freedom, time, joy and moments of happiness.

Structure conveys lightness.

A clear space favours concentration and allows more focus.

Order & structure make me calm, clear, secure and stable That's why we chose the colour blue and the cloud icon for this element of life.

The fog in the brain

Recently my head was tired and listless for a long time.

I found it difficult to concentrate.

I kept jumping up from my desk because I got distracted.

I was restless and unfocussed and took twice as long as usual to do the same task.

Pulling myself together, trying to concentrate - none of that helped. It's called brain fog. It is a widespread phenomenon that robs you of all concentration and "clouds" your view of the essentials. You can no longer think clearly, forget the simplest things and feel like you're wrapped in cotton wool.

Brain fog can have many causes. It can be triggered by a lack of nutrients, but also by certain life circumstances that are not good for the body and mind.

On 30 May at 19:00, I will be giving a webinar on this topic for the first time:

Overcome brain fog. Get a strong, alert brain.

I declare

What weakens your brain and how you can reduce it

What measures - some of them very simple - you can take to dispel the fog in your head and think more clearly and sharply again.

In this blog post, I'll show you how organisation and structure can have a positive effect on your mental performance.

Order freed from ballast

A friend of mine told me that she had moved her entire cellar three times. It was only in the fourth flat that she faced up to the chaos and started to clear out and tidy up. In the end, the contents of the cellar were two thirds less.

So she had wasted a lot of energy and time transporting unused things from one place to another. Some of the ballast has now disappeared from her life. A fixed structure now enables her to put things straight where they belong.

Does this sound familiar? That feeling of trepidation when you enter a room you've been meaning to tidy for a long time? Or the cupboard where some of the things fall out every time you open it? Or the restlessness when you look at your desk and the many sheets of paper still lying there?

Tidiness is now rarely a chore for me. I usually find it beneficial when my life is tidy.

The benefits of order and a tidy environment

Most people mix up tidying and organising. This is a major stress factor and stumbling block. You usually get stuck in the process when you start to think about where things belong while tidying up. This is exhausting and frustrating.

Tidying up means: Something has a fixed place. I'll put it back there.

Organising means: Something doesn't have a fixed place yet. I have to think about where it belongs.

It is therefore advisable to distinguish between tidying and organising. Both rarely work at the same time. You probably already have an existing and functioning order in some areas. And not yet in other areas. It is advisable to organise strategically here. We'll look at this in the first week.

Energy also includes mental energy.

Maybe you've already had to deal with brain fog - after too much alcohol, too little sleep or even after a viral infection or vaccination. Or - like me - with brain fog. Then you know what it's like when you can no longer think clearly and energetically.

It is even worse if this becomes a permanent condition.

The bad news is that some things cannot be influenced - genes play just as much a role as environmental influences.

The good news is that you can do a lot to keep your brain fit. Even into old age.

Order, structure and our brain

It takes a lot of mental energy to frequently switch from one thing to another. An email here, a text there, watering flowers there, then making coffee and making phone calls on the side.

The poor brain soon gets too much from the constant jumping back and forth and can no longer concentrate on really important tasks.

An organised and structured life starts in the mind. The brain is an extremely powerful organ that can process information and impulses from outside at great speed.

But even the best brain reaches its limits when it has to react to too much. For example, to ringtones, advertising messages, emails, etc. And when it lacks the breaks and space it needs to process information.

The brain is addicted to novelty - that's why we look at adverts, even if the topic, e.g. dog treats, doesn't interest us at all.

When the brain receives no external stimuli, it begins to sort and categorise the information it already has and to think up solutions to problems.

Most people don't take in any new information while showering - the brain has time to think about things and often comes up with the best ideas.

Breaks are good for the brain and soulTake a break every 60-90 minutes when you realise that you are getting tired.

Siesta: I like to take a nap at lunchtime.

A break for the senses: Ensure that rooms are as visually and acoustically quiet as possible. Stop interruptions - not only from colleagues, but also from the telephone and internet.

Time in nature: Being outside every day and doing nothing but walking, seeing and feeling.

Online detox

The constant availability of mobile devices takes up a lot of time. Germans spend 2.5 hours a day on social media and check every five to seven minutes to see if an email has arrived. However, they believe they do it much less often, and many of the chunks of information we absorb through social media give us a brief kick. They have an addictive effect comparable to drugs. Experts recommend cutting back drastically in order to maintain vitality and productivity:

Switch off notifications: You react to notification signals with slight tension. Reduction relieves stress.

Define mobile-free zones: Being available everywhere robs us of inner peace. You can define it here: No mobile phones in the bathroom, bedroom or at mealtimes.

Set mobile-free times: No more Internet from x o'clock in the evening, only read e-mails at work, no Internet on Sundays and on holiday, etc.

Anyone who limits their use of the internet and social media will struggle with withdrawal. The thrill of "just checking" and the fear of missing out are powerful drivers. It helps to place the devices out of sight and out of reach or to leave them at home on a long walk. Once you've got used to it, you won't want to miss the relief and freedom that such times provide.

Multitasking detox

Multitasking is hip. Most people imagine that they can easily do two tasks at the same time. They are wrong. Brain research shows that we don't do things at the same time, but merely jump back and forth quickly between tasks.

You realise this when you "quickly" answer an email during a presentation and then realise that you weren't really listening during that time.

Each switch costs the brain three seconds of time. The average employee checks their email every five minutes - 24 switching times per hour = 72 seconds lost per hour = almost 10 minutes per day. That's almost an hour a week.

Then there is the loss of flow. If you're really into a task and are interrupted by other people or interrupt yourself, it can take up to 30 minutes to get back into the flow.

If you want to maintain your brain's strength and energy, it's a good idea to stick to one task and finish it.

This can mean signalling to colleagues that you don't want to be interrupted for a while. Or you can go to another room to concentrate on your work.

To avoid interrupting yourself, it is advisable to consciously switch off tempting distractions - e.g. mute your mobile phone and deactivate the internet.

Was ein Wetterphänomen und Hundefutter mit deiner Denkleistung zu tun hat und warum Ordnung und Struktur positive Auswirkungen haben?
