You'll find out today.

This blog post deals thematically with the life element Celebrations & Highlights from my swing concept of the 8+1 life elements.

celebrate icon

Celebration is the ability to recognise the highlights in life and to emphasise what is special. Recognising the small and large particularities of life. Connecting with other people. I associate it with joy, pleasure, conviviality and celebration.

Without celebrations and highlights, life becomes bland.

We have chosen the colour purple and the balloon icon for this element

Ola, Spansich move

Celebrating big occasions such as birthdays and weddings is easy for us. Most people are good at celebrating highlights. But we seem to limit celebrations to special holidays.

However, most people find it difficult to recognise and celebrate special moments in everyday life. That is why I would like to invite you to deepen the celebration in your everyday life.

Celebrating something together not only usually boosts the mood, but also strengthens the bond between people. Celebrations don't have to be reserved for a specific date. This is how I have defined celebrations for myself: Celebrating means emphasising the special.

The special thing can be the longed-for job that you now have in your pocket. Or the first day you can wear a spring dress again after a long winter. Coaches such as Steve de Shazer and Christine Carter have a perhaps rather unusual approach to celebrating. They recommend consciously celebrating what you want to see more of.

The need to celebrate

The desire to celebrate special events is part and parcel of being human. Celebrating puts you in a good mood. Everyone experiences enough tension and stress throughout the day. There's no harm in impregnating your head and heart with a few extra portions of positive hormones by celebrating.

Life is full of special moments that bring us joy and that we can celebrate - if we recognise them. This is an art that can be learnt and strengthened so that it becomes more and more natural to see and celebrate the big and small treasures in everyday life.

Helpful tips to experience more special moments in everyday life

Change perspective and celebrate

Example: Rush hour. The underground is full, it's noisy and cramped, you can't find a seat. Or you're stuck in another traffic jam at the traffic lights that annoy you every morning.

You can think about it: What exciting things can I discover? How many different car brands can I see? What shoes or shirts are people wearing? This often leads to you discovering something new and being happy about it. You can also list what you have, e.g. a car or ticket, and gratefully accept it: Not everyone has what I have and experience. It is something special.

Be present and celebrate

It's easy for your attention to wander from where you are. You're sitting in a café with a friend and are constantly looking at your mobile phone so you don't miss anything. Or you post pictures of coffee and cake instead of enjoying both.

Here it is helpful to make a clear decision: I am now fully present and aware of what is around me. I put my mobile phone in my pocket and don't leave it on the table.

Activate and celebrate the senses

We absorb the treasures of everyday life with our five senses. We can consciously activate them and ask ourselves again and again: What do I see now? What can I feel now? What do I hear now? What do I smell now? What am I tasting now?

If you have registered something beautiful, it is helpful if you consciously perceive it for twenty seconds and memorise it. This anchors it deeper in your emotions and memory.

Strengthen your perception

Focus on one of the three aspects for the next seven days and consciously practise your awareness of the special moments in everyday life that are worth celebrating.

Many good reasons to celebrate

In the German language, the word feiern appears frequently and in very different contexts. Happy occasions are celebrated: Topping-out ceremony, wedding, graduation. We also speak of celebrations for sad events: farewell parties, funerals.

Religious holidays, which are called holy days (holidays) in other languages, are also called "public holidays" here. Unlike in other languages, where the time after work is simply called "after work", we have the - sometimes long-awaited - end of work.

It is exciting that we encounter the word "celebrate" in so many different ways.

Why do we celebrate?

Reinforcing good things: One reason to celebrate is to reinforce something good. This is how special achievements are celebrated - as a reward and with the hope that this will continue to spur on the person being celebrated or others.

Strengthening faith: In a religious context, celebrations - whether weekly church services or individual festivals such as Easter, Passover or Eid - strengthen the cohesion of the faithful and the faith of the individual.

Promote cohesion: In professional, private and family environments, celebrations such as birthdays, weddings and even funerals strengthen and promote connections between people. In companies, company celebrations and anniversaries strengthen cohesion.

Marking periods of time: The brain needs markers to find meaningful structures for life events. Celebrations can be used to set these markers.

That's why we celebrate to mark the beginning of something new or to say goodbye to something old. We celebrate the birth of a new citizen, their communion or confirmation or youth consecration. Later, we celebrate their coming of age, but also their retirement and finally even their farewell to life in this world.

There are many reasons to celebrate. But we all have phrases that prevent us from enjoying life. We have heard from our parents: "First work, then pleasure!" Or think to ourselves: "If I don't do it, nobody will!" "I have to take care of everything!" It helps to ask: Who says that? Does it bring life? If these sentences are obviously not life-giving, then it's time to muck out.

Ask yourself:

- Who told me this sentence? Or: Who did I learn this from?

- Decide: Do I want to take this further?

- If not, what do I want instead?

Write down three of your typical driver sentences. Develop honest, realistic counter-phrases to them.

A day full of opportunities to celebrate

Celebrating means nothing more than letting go of the everyday for a short or longer moment and enjoying something special.

As already described, you can take and find big and small occasions to celebrate. They can be private or public. The important thing here is that the event being celebrated is perceived as something special - no matter how small or large.

What do you celebrate?

The speciality

This can have to do with your own achievements - such as a sporting or professional success. But it can also be that you are celebrating something for which you can do nothing or not much - such as a birthday or a lottery win or the fact that you have finally found something on the tight housing market.

The everyday

It is easier to celebrate in everyday life if you utilise a characteristic of the brain. It wants to flood us with intense hormones and feelings when we experience something for the first time. I shamelessly exploit this by using a trick. I let my brain know that I'm experiencing certain things for the first time - at least on that day.

"I've just seen the first sunrise of the day!"

"Now I'm showering for the first time!"

"This is the first coffee of the day!"

The brain doesn't care whether the first experience of this kind is also the last one of the day. It only hears the keyword "the first" and gives me very pleasant feelings.

It may be primitive to trick your own brain like this - I don't care. Everyone experiences enough tension and stress throughout the day. The body releases lots of stress hormones, such as cortisol. So it's helpful. It's helpful to impregnate your head and heart with a few extra portions of strengthening hormones such as the "happiness hormone" dopamine as a preventative measure.

Celebrate

???? What could be something special today that you would like to emphasise in your everyday life? Take the worksheet Celebrating the special things in everyday life and fill in the blank space with special features, successes and firsts that you have experienced today. Celebrate the moments.

You can do this through your inner attitude alone: You can celebrate how far you have come with something and take the time to be happy about it.

???? On the list of ideas you will also find many suggestions on how to celebrate.

What celebrating can also be

Gratitude is a form of celebration

Being grateful creates space for further development. Why should life give us new, beautiful things if we don't recognise the gifts we already have? Being grateful means appreciating what we have been given - this connects us with others.

We can also be gratefully proud of what we have achieved, that makes us strong. I like the fact that the creation story says that God looks at his work at the end of each day and says: "That was good!"

Compassion can be a way of celebrating

When I told a friend about a surprising professional success, she took the time to savour the joy with me. She didn't just say the usual "How great!" or "Great!" Instead, she asked intensely: "What exactly is it that makes you so happy?" "What about it excites you?" "What does this success say about you - and about what you have achieved?"

She took more than 40 minutes to empathise with my joy and to strengthen and deepen it with her questions. I was very touched by this. I had never experienced deep empathy with joy with such intensity before. But it's something I want to learn.

Milestones are worth celebrating

It makes for more frequent happiness. When I was rebuilding the ship, I realised that if I only rejoice at the end, when the big goal of being finished has been achieved, I can only rejoice once. Years of hard work for a few hours or days of joy - that's not much. I practised celebrating every intermediate step - marvellous!

Celebrating life together

Things that you experience together are a source of happiness and joie de vivre. Shared experiences increase happiness in two ways. Firstly, it is often more intense and enjoyable when you experience something together. It's wonderful when you can say to someone else: "Look!" - and the other person then sees what you are seeing yourself. It also creates a bond.

Memories are shared. "Do you remember how we queued for two hours to get into the exhibition?" Or: "Do you remember how we fled from the thunderstorm?"

Impulse for action

Which of the forms of celebration described above are you discovering in your day today? Do you want to consciously organise it? How does it feel? What does it do to you and within you?

Was dein Alltag und Spanisch mit mehr Lebensfreude zu tun hat? Das wirst du heute erfahren.
