\"2013-10-19<\/a><\/strong>Was I alive today?<\/h3>\n

Yes!<\/p>\n

Hard work (derusting in a space 1 m wide, 150 m deep and 80 cm high is no fun\u2026) and light work on board in glorious sunshine. And we\u2019re making progress\u2026 some of the insulation panels, which were left over from the previous owner and have been lying around getting in the way for the last 18 months, have finally been fitted and are doing what they\u2019re meant to do \u2013 insulating a wall.<\/p>\n

And in the evening, a wonderfully inspiring concert by Christiane D\u00f6ring \u2013 perfect for letting your mind wander\u2026 She has a fantastic voice and really brought out the best in the songs by Schumann, Schubert and others\u2026 full of nuance, romantic, profound and, in places, very humorous too.<\/p>\n

The funniest moment, however, was undoubtedly afterwards. I got a bit flustered when I suddenly saw two police cars outside the pub \u2013 right where I\u2019d parked my hire car\u2026 not quite the required distance from the corner. \u201eNo need to get worked up,\u201c commented a friend of a friend, who\u2019d previously claimed that nothing could rattle him: \u201eThey wouldn\u2019t send two patrol cars just because of a badly parked car.\u201c He was right.<\/p>\n

What have I discovered about life?<\/h3>\n

It is in giving that one receives the greatest gift of all. <\/strong>I received a text message from a friend whilst I was in the middle of working; she needed advice and support. I made time for her \u2013 whilst I was treating the slats\u2026 You can paint and think at the same time. In the middle of the conversation, I heard myself say: \u201eWhat preoccupies us most are situations where we don\u2019t understand what\u2019s going on \u2013 our brain wants to make sense of things and understand them \u2013 if it can\u2019t, then it keeps plugging away \u2013 because it wants to find an explanation!\u201c<\/p>\n

I told her that, and at the same time it dawned on me that this was an answer for me too. I\u2019m currently faced with behaviour from someone that I simply can\u2019t make sense of, and my brain is working overtime trying to understand what\u2019s going on. But it\u2019s more like a jigsaw puzzle where some pieces are missing\u2026<\/p>\n

The solution? I\u2019m still torn between two options:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Simply settle on a working hypothesis (Person X behaves in a certain way because \u2026) and let it rest.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Deciding that it\u2019s not something that can be resolved (after all, who can really understand another person?)\u2026 and finding peace with that.<\/p>\n

What have I discovered about myself?<\/h3>\n

I don\u2019t miss out. In the end, those who give always receive in return.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0A friend offered to say that her father, who is a qualified electrician, could help me with the boat\u2019s electrical work. I\u2019ve got a lot to get to grips with, and I don\u2019t just need people to lend a hand \u2013 though I\u2019m grateful for every helping hand. I also really need help with planning. I need to talk to people who know what they\u2019re doing and can work things through with me. Someone who\u2019s experienced and is patient enough to spend a few hours explaining things to me is a huge blessing for me. The fact that I\u2019d specifically prayed for an electrician who could advise and support me makes it all the more wonderful.<\/p>\n

This morning I was sitting on the sofa, crying with emotion, because I can hardly understand why I\u2019ve been blessed so much. Suddenly, it occurred to me: \u201eThrough the projects you\u2019ve initiated and supported, you\u2019ve helped ensure that hundreds of people in Afghanistan now have a roof over their heads and clean drinking water again\u2026 You\u2019ve helped them\u2026 and now others are helping you to build your house and boat!\u201c<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been doubly blessed: on the one hand, it has made me happy to be able to help. Being able to give people a home is simply wonderful. And on the other hand, I am blessed by the gifts that come back to me in the form of help.<\/p>\n
