When I leave here, I want to be more confident in many areas than I was when I started here. And I'm (almost) not afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are part of it. I'm not just saying that as head knowledge. A few years ago, a true story helped me realise how important mistakes are for learning.

A few years ago I once heard about Robert Kiyosaki read, who was a very unsuccessful Xerox copier salesman. When he told his mentor about this, he said: „You're currently only making a few sales calls a day. How on earth are you going to learn what works and what doesn't? You need to find a way to increase your error rate to learn faster!“
In order to deliberately increase his error rate, the man sought out a second job as a telemarketer in addition to his job at Xerox. There he had to spend four hours every evening on the phone selling people something. In the beginning, he made one mistake after another. But because he had so many conversations, he learnt fast, what works and what doesn't. And he got better and better - as a telemarketer and then also as a Xerox salesman. In the end, he was honoured as the best salesman in his state, but then left Xerox to set up his own business.

Even if spiritual things cannot be compared to selling photocopiers, the fact is that we have a lot to learn. For example, I still have no idea how to actually pray for the sick. Or even how I can tell whether someone has a „normal“ illness or something that has been caused by demonic influence. A normal illness is healed. If there is demonic influence, it makes sense to first look at how it came in (often through trauma, pain or disobedience to God). Once this has been cleared up, you can pray for deliverance in the authority of Jesus. So much for the theory. I still want to learn how to do this in practice. But today I asked Aliss about her experiences.

The task for today was to practise words of knowledge. As far as I know, it is not 100% theologically clear how this is defined. But many people in ministry understand it to mean that you get knowledge about a situation in someone's life that you can't naturally know about a person unless God has revealed it.

Often God reveals through a word of knowledge something that is important to another person, or a difficulty in their job or relationship that God wants to help them with. Or God reveals an illness or other need that He wants to meet.

The way in which you receive a word of knowledge can be very different. Sometimes you have an inner feeling, sometimes you see a picture or have a certain word in your head, sometimes you feel pain yourself in the place that God wants to heal in another person.

As I prayed and asked God for such a word, I remembered that a man here had told me that he was not doing a certain thing. I felt that there was something behind it that God wanted to meet. I asked him about it. He scratched his chin: „Hmm, that could be it!“ Not exactly a direct hit.

Then I realised that a woman's aunt had taken something away from her as a child that was personally valuable to her. I told her about it. And she said: „I only have one aunt - she made life difficult for all of us. But I don't know if she took anything away from me. I can't remember that.“

Hmm...bull's eye sounds different. But I'm learning. And make mistakes.

Later, during an encounter with another woman, the word „brother“ came to mind. I asked her if she had a brother. She told me some details from her family history and that she had been thinking a lot about her brother in the last few days. Since I didn't have anything else clear from God, I asked her if I could pray for the relationship between the siblings. And I simply prayed for a blessing. She was touched and encouraged. I was too. I think it's great that you are introduced to new things here step by step. And I want to learn, learn, learn.

The man I asked if he had recently cut his finger answered in the negative. Clearly a mistake. Also ok. Not the end of the world.

On the subject of „Hearing God's voice“, we have selected the book by Steve Thompson „Everyone can speak prophetically!“ recommended to me. I've seen Steve live before - he's a brilliant trainer. The very first section of the chapter on the way God speaks was really something: „If we want to learn to hear God's voice, it's important to realise that God's voice is rarely just a voice!“

There are, of course, the dramatic forms of communication from God. Angels, visions, being caught up to heaven. You get them when you experience them. But we often miss God speaking because it comes across so inconspicuously. He then describes different ways in which God communicates:

An inner thought - This is the famous „quiet, inner voice“ that we often push away. What helps me to recognise whether it is God's voice is the defensive reaction. When a thought arises from myself, I rarely think immediately afterwards „What kind of strange thought is that? Where did it come from?“ If I categorise a thought as „worthy of notice“, this can be an indication that it did not originate from me, but from God.

A Feeling, that is not typical for you (I once felt very inferior on a prayer journey, which is not typical for me. I thought I felt this because I was the youngest and least experienced in the team. After three days, we realised that everyone on the team felt this way - even the people who were spiritual heroes in my eyes. We understood that God was making us feel a feeling that was not ours, but that characterised the country we were in - many people there obviously felt this way. This gave us a clue as to how we could pray. I often felt something similar when we were out praying in Berlin or elsewhere: Suddenly there was a sense of oppression or joy or naughtiness or... These were not „my“ feelings, but God's way of communicating something to me about what was going on in that neighbourhood through my feelings.

Similarities: When you see someone, you are suddenly reminded of someone else and think. It can be that God draws your attention to a similarity, e.g. that the person you see has a similar calling or similar problems to the person you know. I have just experienced a very funny variation of this way of God speaking. I met a woman I already knew in the kitchen. Her nose reminded me of a potato tuber. I didn't tell her that, of course, because I didn't want to offend her. But I thought about what I had just read about „associations with similarities“ and then went on to think about what potato stands for. Clearly for food. I then told her that I felt she was someone who nourishes many people - not with sweet stuff, but with healthy basic food. „Yes, that's right!“ she said. „My family is from Ireland and my potatoes are simply the best. That's why my children and grandchildren call me the Potato Queen!„ Sorry. I should have said the potato thing (not the nose thing, of course). Then I prayed that God would bless them. And while I was praying, I thought of the story of a Swiss farmer who, in a dry year, harvested potatoes with faith in God, even though the cabbage had completely dried up. His potatoes were huge. I felt that she should dig deep and then experience harvest in places where she didn't expect it. She told me that last year she thought her potato plants had not yielded a crop. But when she dug up the old potato soil in winter, she discovered huge potatoes in the depths - which were unfortunately no longer edible. When God speaks through an image that you have actually experienced yourself, there is of course a good chance that you will remember it. I don't know what “digging deep„ means to her...but I suspect she won't forget it in a hurry. I think that was as close to a direct hit as you can get on a first day.

Pain / body sensations: When praying for someone else, some people suddenly feel a pain in a place where they don't normally feel pain. This can be a sign from God that the person in question is in pain - and that God wants to heal it.

Odours and taste: Smelling or tasting something that is not actually perceptible and does not match the surroundings or what you last ate, for example, a wonderful odour that you suddenly perceive can indicate worship.

There are many other ways in which God can communicate...e.g. signs. For example, signs: I often see road signs and inscriptions - and suddenly they take on a spiritual meaning for me.

Very often it is not about getting God to talk. He likes to talk all the time. Rather, it is an art to learn to perceive his manifold communication with us and through us for others.

I asked Rob, the leader here, how he himself gets words of realisation. He gave me a few valuable ideas:

Practise being in an attitude of attention towards God.

We will never be 100% sure whether we have a word from God or not. Faith is always spelt like this: R. I. S. K. I. O.

I use my imagination to enter into listening. I often go to the Father's throne in my thoughts in the morning. Then I ask him: What do you have in your hand for me today? For me as a gift or for me to pass on to others? Then I try to perceive with my spiritual eyes what he has in his hand.

The time between waking and sleeping is often a time when God speaks a lot. The Bible calls this „nocturnal visions“, which are different from dreams. If I am awake enough to make a note of what I see in these phases between sleeping and waking, then these are often the clearest and most precious impressions.

We have the mind of Christ. Therefore, if we are moulded and shaped by him, there is often not much difference between what we think and what Christ wants to do. I was at dinner last night and just had it on my heart to encourage the waitress. A carafe of water with lemons reminded me of the saying, „When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!“ I had the feeling that she was a woman who could turn the difficult into the positive and told her so. She then told me that her grandmother had passed away a week ago and that this was her first day at work and that the word would encourage her.

I will continue to ask Rob and others here questions. And learn from their experiences. You can make all the mistakes yourself, but sometimes it's also useful to benefit from the mistakes and experiences of others. Then you learn faster.

Now it's time to sleep: there's a conference here for 3 days starting tomorrow. I probably won't be able to write then either. But afterwards.

Ich will lernen, lernen, lernen. Wenn ich hier weggehe, will ich in vielen Bereichen sicherer sein als ich es zu Beginn hier war.
