Not entirely voluntarily. I had a visitor looking for a room for a weekend. When I have visitors, they usually get my bedroom and I sleep on a mattress on the floor. No problem.

But when things didn't work out with the flat, it was clear that the visitor could stay longer. And then there were more visitors and more visitors. Yesterday I slept in my own bed for the first time since the end of August, it felt soooo good.

After a few weeks as an „internally displaced person“, I realised how much the situation was wearing on my nerves. There's work in the tiny office, people are constantly walking through the living room, the bedroom is occupied, the kitchen is too small for a table. And I find it difficult to sleep without a blackout. On top of that, it was noisier in my mattress dormitory and when I opened the window, there was a strong draught. If I kept it closed, there wasn't enough air. Nothing particularly dramatic. But coupled with a good amount of work and a few other challenges (boat, finances, lectures), it took a lot out of me.

And it gave me a lot of compassion. With the people who are now arriving here - after months of walking - and have yet to find peace and a home. And it has encouraged me to do what I can to alleviate people's suffering. I am good at communicating and organising.

Together with my team, I created the Quadro „Welcome culture. Getting to know and supporting refugees“ published. It wasn't supposed to come out until spring, but in view of the current situation, we've gone full throttle and published it now. The Quattro explains the background to flight, provides an insight into the fates of refugees, explains how to acquire cultural competence and shows where and how you can get involved.

I am convinced that many people are willing to contribute if you just tell them how. 19% of Germans say they would like to donate to refugees but don't know where! My recommendation: Diakonie, Caritas or one of the creative projects that are organised by Crowdfunding be financed. My current favourite: Kiron University, which enables refugees to complete their studies for just 400 euros per year (!!). My wish would be for 10,000 refugees to be able to study here and then either find qualified jobs here or help with reconstruction in their home country.

It's the same with practical help. An elderly lady told me that she had just wanted to drop off a few care items at Caritas. Then the employee asked her if she would like to look after a refugee. She said: „I'd rather look after a family!“ The employee: „A really nice family is arriving tomorrow!“ So she and her husband became sponsors of a Syrian family of six. They show them around and teach them their first language skills. If hands and feet are not enough to communicate, a friend of the family who has been here for six months is contacted via WhatsApp. He is then happy to translate.

I think many people feel the same way as the pensioner couple: They would like to lend a hand, but don't really know where. They need someone to say: „Here's an opportunity (whether it's sorting clothes or teaching German or helping with visits to the authorities or whatever). Why don't you join in?“ Here in Berlin, I see a great willingness among migrants and refugees who have only been here for a few months to get involved. I work in an initial accommodation centre that is almost exclusively run by volunteers - and I see how Germans, Iranians, Arabs, Americans etc. live together to make people's arrival easier. I also see the whole situation as an opportunity to mitigate the mistakes that have been made in the integration of foreigners over the past decades through this new shared task, and perhaps even to heal some of them.

Many of the refugees also want to get involved. One of my friends told me that he would like to translate the content of my LEA course into Arabic to empower other refugees. A young man from Tunisia is currently helping me to reactivate my completely rusty French, improving my text messages and explaining things to me so that I am halfway fit in the language for my brother's wedding near Lyon. Many refugees long to get involved somewhere.

I'm tired - from the 2 months on the mattress and all the work that the new Quadro, the blog and all the things around it entail. And infinitely grateful. Where others only see the difficulties, I see the difficulties - and the endless opportunities to develop creativity and show love. And how much can be easily organised via the internet.

I have just passed three shops on my way to the health food shop: an orthopaedic shop, where I asked for thrombosis stockings for „my“ refugee accommodation, then the pharmacy, which will put together a package of medication for me, and finally the optician, who gave me three bags of glasses for the refugees (these were all on the list of requirements that is published on the Internet). The shopkeepers thanked me for letting them help!

The best thing is still the encounters with people. At the weekend, I went to a classical music concert with a group of refugees. Among other things, a mass was sung. I explained to the man sitting next to me that these were sung texts from the Bible and I translated the words into English. He was deeply moved. And said to me about twenty times „Those are such good words“ „They touched my heart!“
When I think about it, I am touched and enriched myself. I see the treasures I have with completely new eyes because I have just seen them through the eyes of someone who heard these words for the first time.

How wonderful to live in this time.

****************************

One more request: I'm constantly reading comments on social media about why everything is so difficult and disastrous.
