\"45443_10150269187565249_4517196_n\"\u201eWhat - no woman has ever preached in the church before - and they are the first to take you<\/strong> - with all your unconventionality - not a more sedate woman?\u201c My best friend once again said what she was thinking quite directly.<\/p>\n

It was true - in this modern-conservative congregation (modern in terms of music and technology, conservative in terms of traditions), a woman had never been allowed to stand behind the lectern in a Sunday service. At seminars, in the youth group yes - but not in the main service. The traditional opinion was. Teaching and preaching is reserved for men.<\/p>\n

This tradition was scrutinised, the biblical statements were examined more closely and the majority of the leadership came to the conclusion that some of the biblical passages that seem to prohibit women from leading and teaching are tendentiously translated or taken out of context: the famous passage about the silence of women in the church is found in a passage where the most diverse groups are told to remain silent - at certain times and in certain contexts. In the case of women, the silence refers to questions that they should not ask in between, but should rather ask their husbands (who were usually more educated at the time) at home.<\/p>\n

So the congregation had decided to let a woman speak - me. But there were still protests. Some of those who disagreed with the decision demonstratively left the room when I went to the front to speak. Others criticised my glasses afterwards, which covered my face (I had conjunctivitis and, for once, wasn't wearing contact lenses - are preaching men also criticised for their eyewear?) Or for the fact that I hadn't used Power Point (um... did Paul use Power Point).<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, I survived. So did the community. Ten years have passed since then. Many Christian churches have found a respectful coexistence between men and women, who together use their God-given gifts - including the gifts of teaching and leadership - for the good of all. Has words such as Gal. 3, 28, which emphasise that Christ has dissolved the traditional categories of judgement and evaluation (race, origin, status, gender): \u201ein Christ, neither being a man nor being a woman counts for anything).<\/p>\n

In other places and in some congregations, a clear position has not yet been found. And some women are still looking for a way to use their God-given gifts, but also to honour and respect the Bible, which in some places seems to restrict the exercise of these gifts.<\/p>\n

For the men and women who are concerned by these questions, I have spent the last few months intensively examining all the questions, opinions and positions surrounding the topic of \u201ewomen who lead and teach\u201c. And then I wrote a new quadro on the subject:<\/p>\n

\"45494_10150269190115249_2221367_n\"It was important to me to first make clear what there is no doubt about. The quadro therefore first shows the many things that are clear: that God has gifted and commissioned men and women to do good to this earth and the people and creatures on it. They are to spread God's loving rule as his messengers.<\/p>\n

This is the mission that was given to both sexes together and which God would never have taken back or entrusted to only one of the two sexes. And this despite the fact that some things in both sexes are naturally broken and can be healed.<\/p>\n

It is also clear that there have been countless women throughout biblical and secular history who have done just that. They have blessed the world with their gifts, talents and courage - sometimes quietly in the background, sometimes in the forefront. Some of the women who have led in their own way and have shaped and changed their world and ours are also presented in the Quadro.<\/p>\n

In addition to the many things that are clear and unambiguous, there are some things that are confusing and don't seem to fit. I also addressed these difficult passages in the quadro - some tensions can be resolved relatively easily if you take a closer look at the context. Others are not. I formulated that honestly and left it at that.<\/p>\n

It was good for me to take a closer look at all these issues once again. Apart from some questions that remain, it has above all given me new clarity. It's not so much about which chromosomes we carry within us, but which Lord!<\/p>\n

So much in brief. More detailed information on all these topics can be found in the Quadro<\/a>, which I hope will help many people to sort things out and provide clarity.<\/p>\n
