While the world is restlessly moving to the rhythm of the flower-power-hippie-68 revolution, time seems to have stood still in a Swiss village. There - as the title of a film by Petra Volpe suggests - it is still seen as the divine order that men alone have the right to decide their wives' money and fortunes. <\/em><\/p>\n

This changes when Nora, mother of two children, expresses the wish to go to work. Her husband, Hans, does not allow her to do so. The men are in charge - that's the law, which is also made by men - Swiss women don't have the right to vote. <\/em><\/p>\n

Something awakens in Nora and she begins to campaign for women's right to vote in her village. Other women join her and in the end they organise a strike and lay down irons and wooden spoons to draw attention to the urgency of their cause.<\/em>
\nNaturally, conflicts arise. The old order was established for so long that it was perceived as divine. You don't overthrow something like that overnight. Hans is ridiculed as the husband of an emancipated woman, the men in the village try to intimidate their wives with violence. <\/em><\/p>\n

In the end, encrusted patterns break open. In a moving scene, Nora explains that the divine order is that men and women both have their place. And her husband's pride in his courageous wife is written all over his face. And yes, they also win the majority in favour of women's suffrage.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n
