How do I organise transitions from the old to the new?
I've just got out of the kayak, a rather narrow youth kayak (bad buy on eBay). Getting out was a bit tricky. Besides, I wasn't keen on falling into the water in winter, even though I practised swimming with clothes on.
Transitions are always tricky. It doesn't matter whether it's a landing while flying, a move, the turn of the year or even just the end of one edition and the beginning of a new one.
Transitions are important
Scientific studies of children who had to be evacuated from a country have shown that the children who had time to consciously say goodbye to people and places in their future lives coped better than those who were no longer able to do so.
If you stumble from one thing to another without being able to properly detach yourself, you put a strain on your psyche, but also on your thinking. Hasty transitions leave so many questions and „windows“ open in your head that they rob you of energy for other things.
Designing transitions
It doesn't matter whether you're moving to a new place, starting a new relationship, a new year or a new month, or „just“ finalising a project: It's extremely important for the psyche to say: "That's over now."
For larger projects, it is worth taking a look back at
- Aspects for which we are grateful
- Aspects to be proud of
Gratitude strengthens the connection with other people and God / life itself. Healthy pride in one's own achievements (not to be confused with arrogant, hybrid pride „I'm just so great“) strengthens self-confidence.
Celebrating transitions
Celebrating means emphasising the special I have written in my book The good life written. You can celebrate with a big, lavish party, fireworks or a special meal. Or it can be very small, e.g. with a nice cup of tea and a break or even just a smile or an inner pat on the back after a completed project.
Those who mark transitions well live healthier lives than people who rush from one to the next without a break. I also talked about how to organise review and transitions in my webinar Shaping the future spoken.

I hope that you take the short or longer moments to organise transitions well. This may take some time - but it is often worth it in the strength it gives you.
