Layer by layer
Six days ago, I found out that the attic where I store a lot of books here in Berlin is being thermally insulated. That in itself is very welcome. I'm always in favour of sensible environmental and climate protection. But in practical terms, it means I have to move five tonnes of books and other material elsewhere.
At first I was quite overwhelmed by the idea. There's no room for it in my 9 square metre office. But complaining doesn't help either. A solution had to be found. I couldn't think of a practicable and affordable solution for everything. So I do what I often do, shift after shift. Once or twice a day I go up to the attic, look at the things and come up with something for one or two things.
I wrote to two customers who came to mind. Both agreed to buy some books (approx. 150 kilos). One step further. In other places, space could be created by rearranging. Some things are going to the second-hand shop. And I still have to think of something for the other things. Layer by layer.
I often experience it that way. If there is no big solution, then you can tackle something by tackling it layer by layer. Start at a point where you can see a bit of a solution. And then keep going. And then at some point you'll be surprised to realise that the seemingly unsolvable problem has finally been solved. Layer by layer.
