Lazy Saturday and Williamsburg

A lazy Saturday. Lazing about for ages. Breakfast with friends. Doing this and that. Later in the afternoon, off to Williamsburg – in northern Brooklyn. A very diverse neighbourhood. Trendy and hip on the one hand, full of young people from all over the world strutting through the streets in all sorts of outfits.

Rather uniform on the other side. Hasidic Jews, all wearing (almost) identical coats, hats, side curls and wigs (the women), living in flats with barred windows. (I haven’t worked out why… perhaps so that their many children wouldn’t be in danger???).

A film night on a friend’s rooftop terrace. Even more fascinating than the film was the view: a panorama of Manhattan with the Empire State Building and everything else that goes with it – the Williamsburg Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge – all bathed in the light of the setting sun. Almost like something out of a film.

  1. Ah, that’s one of the highlights of this blog that I’m so glad to see back: your travelogues! It’s lovely to be back in New York with you ;-)
