Coaching is easy
1. coaching is simple
My great wish is to empower 100 women and a few men every quarter. By accompanying them as a coach. Or even training them as coaches myself. One after the other.
Coaching is simple. But not easy. - Steve de Shazer
I can emphasise this sentence by Steve de Shazer, one of the coaching pioneers, twice and three times over.
Coaching is simple.
Counselling is exhausting. Choosing exactly what is right for the person seeking advice from a vast amount of knowledge. That is challenging.
Therapy or counselling can be stressful. You listen to the other person's suffering for a long time and are often emotionally involved yourself. That can be quite emotionally draining. Coaching is easy.
A good coach doesn't need to know everything. Just enough to give the client the feeling:
I am understood here.
He doesn't even have to listen to all the difficult and terrible details. He just asks the right questions. That's enough.
As a coach, you don't have to solve the problem for the other person or give the best advice, as a counsellor is supposed to do.
You don't have to listen to all the details of your problems for hours on end, like empathic therapists and counsellors do.
You have to "only" Listen enough to establish a good connection with the customer. And then give the right impetus.
I often experience this: coaching is easy.
After most coaching sessions, I leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. I have asked questions that have triggered an "aha moment" for my clients.
Customers are often delighted with the solution. "Wow, you've helped me a lot!"
"Your advice was great."
The funny thing is that I didn't give any advice at all, but "only" questions that led them to their own solution.
2. coaching is not easy
I only feel stressed and exhausted when I have the stupid idea that I have to give the other person advice or have inadvertently slipped into the role of therapist. Both are really exhausting.
But it's what we're used to.
When most people hear about problems, most people tend to give advice and suggestions to others rather than utilising the powerful coaching tools that help people find solutions themselves.
Letting go of this I-told-you-what-to-do pattern is a lifelong learning process. It is not easy.
I confess: sometimes, when I'm tired or stressed, I slip into giving advice myself instead of providing powerful coaching.
It's quicker at first, but it comes at a price: I'm less relaxed myself. And what's worse, it's often not so helpful for the other person.
Genuine coaching achieves far more for the other person than all my clever advice.
In short: learning the most important coaching tools is actually easy.
Letting go of old patterns is not always easy, depending on your personality.
I trust you to do both.
3. learn coaching
It's clear: coaching is easy for me because I'm practised at it.
And because I know the most effective questioning techniques and tools.
