How do you become a coach?
"I was very successful professionally in a large company and know my field well. Now I wanted to start my own business as a coach, but it's not really working out."
"I have created a really nice website with my coaching services, but have only gained two customers so far."
I hear that a lot. It's frustrating when people who could give a lot to others fail when they try to build a coaching business.
There are usually two reasons for this. There is a lack of skill and communication.
Key No. 1: Ability
Expertise alone does not make you a good coach. Expertise enables you to become a good consultant and possibly also a good coach.
But the skill of a coach lies on a different level. It consists of two factors
- Have empathy and sensitivity
In classic coaching, it is not the knowledge that counts, but the ability to initiate processes in the customer.
A good emotional connection between coach and client is the basis of successful coaching - it accounts for up to 70% of coaching success.
If a coach fails to make the connection and / or acts with pressure and accusations, this will usually result in people not opening up and getting the desired results.
That doesn't mean that as a coach you can't be very open, direct and critical from time to time, but the Bridge of trust must first be solidly built.
If you are not a natural at empathy, you can learn it by practising facial expression resonance (https://eilert-akademie.com) or non-violent communication. https://down-to-earth.de/shop/gewaltfreie-kommunikation-einander-von-herzen-verstehen-kerstin-hack/
- Mastering strategies for change
Many people think it's enough to tell the other person what they should do. They know that themselves.
What the person seeking advice needs is support in releasing inner blockages and beliefs or removing the proverbial plank in front of their head etc.
It is important that the coaching not only feels good in the moment, but also has a lasting effectso that customers do not fall back into their old patterns. According to an American study, only around 25% of all coaches achieve this.
As I have already described, "normal talking" is not enough to bring about lasting change. You need professional tools to bring about profound change - especially questioning techniques and techniques that help to change perspectives, release fears and blockages and establish new patterns of behaviour.

Learn coaching
Even if there are some people who have a natural talent for coaching, it makes sense to expand their existing talent with sound knowledge of emotion and psyche and successful coaching methods.
I have been a mentor and companion for others since I was young. I even had the nickname "the chicken" at my school because the younger pupils, the "chicks", often flocked around me when they were looking for help with their problems.
However, my coaching training has greatly improved the quality of my support, the results are deeper and more sustainable. I no longer try things out and hope they work, but know what I am doing and why.
I therefore recommend a
- Professional training
I think a solid systemic coaching training is best - and then additional training later on.
I myself have completed various coaching training programmes, some of them lasting several years, in order to be able to support people in the best possible way, I regularly enjoy supervision and I continue to train myself.
My trainings among others:
- Systematic coaching and supervision (SG)
- Trainer for Non-violent communication
- Wingwave
- EmTrace
- Systemic short-term concepts
- Business focus strategies
- Marketing by StoryBrand
I also belong to Coachnet, the coach pool for companies looking for coaches for their employees.
I recommend anyone who wants to become a coach to invest in a solid, at least one-year (ideally systemic) training programme that places a lot of emphasis on practical implementation and active practice, not just on theory.
A good, recognised institute is, for example, the Würzburg Academy for Empowerment Coaching.
You can then take additional courses in specialised areas.

Key 2: Communication
No matter how good a coach you are - if people don't know it, your business won't work.
Suppose you have a bakery and bake the most delicious bread rolls in the world. How many will you sell if nobody knows about it, your bakery is high up on a mountain and there are no signposts to show people the way?
What does it take for people to discover you and what you have to offer?
Define target group
Before you can communicate, it is important that you first realise who you can serve well.
You can't serve everyone - 8 billion is too much for you.
Concentrate on one target group.
Definition:
Target group = people with the same problems and desires.
Examples of consultants
- Women who want to get a better grip on their financial independence and finances (Natascha Wegelin - Madame Moneypenny: https://madamemoneypenny.de)
- Women who want to become millionaires (Stefanie Reiser: https://millionaerinvonnebenan.de)
- People who want to build a houseboat (Tim Krenke: https://hausboot-kompass.de/)
- People who are looking for clarity and want to release blockages (me: https://kerstinhack.de)
Target groups can grow with you:
I am increasingly developing the target group Coaches and self-employed people who want to become more successful.
Tip: Describe your ideal target group as accurately as possible - imagine a real person with certain worries, problems and characteristics and give him or her a name. (Technical term: avatar).
Whenever you communicate, have this person in mind.
For me this is Clarissaa woman in her prime who is or wants to become independent and is overwhelmed by the many possibilities and is looking for clarity in order to master her life better and become more successful.
That doesn't mean that I don't also coach men from time to time - I really enjoy it. But it does mean that I focus my communication primarily on the "Clarissas".
