Little happiness

For a while now, I have wanted to use my skills as a coach to help refugees deal with stressful experiences efficiently. For various reasons - from communication to other factors - this has never really worked out so far.

Today I had my first coaching session with a young refugee. I work with Wingwave, a method of focussing on stress by asking about the inner images, feelings, body sensations and negative self-statements associated with a particular situation.

It could sound like this, for example: Whenever I think of dogs, I see the neighbour's barking dog in front of me, I feel fear, my shoulders tighten and I think: I am at its mercy.

In my experience with German clients, I often got very surprised looks when we talked about a feeling and I then asked: Where in the body do you feel this feeling? Many of them couldn't name it at all. Not so the young man from Syria. He didn't find it easy to find the right scene, but when asked about the physical perceptibility of the feeling, it came out like a shot: „In the stomach“, „In the heart“, „In the head“, „In the cheeks!“ and so on.

That really fascinated me. And delighted... the joy... I can feel it in my heart and in my head. And in my mouth. It smiles.

  1. Totally exciting Kerstin! So far I've turned down applications from refugees... I'd be really interested to know more about how you were able to help him.
Best wishes from your namesake :) Kerstin

  2. Hello, Kerstin
Sleep is a very complex subject, with physical and mental processes playing a role. That's why I told him a few things that help the body to relax. He already knew a lot of it.
Then we started working on individual stress issues. I primarily work with Wingwave (see Quadro Blockade Release) because the de-stressing happens deep in the linkic system... and has a deep effect. Reflecting well on Andre's methods, for example, doesn't help much with anxiety.
My guess here is that the process of releasing old stress factors and fears will probably take 4 - 8 sessions + further work at home, also because some fears and insecurities are older than the escape.
I hope this helps you and gives you an initial idea.
I also do it on the phone - it's a bit more complicated than live because you have to explain more. But it works too.
