New Year's resolutions: From failure to success - How to make next year your year!

New Year. The sparkling beginning is later followed by normal life.

With a new year comes the typical New Year's resolutions.

But how often have these resolutions failed? Don't worry, you're not alone. Statistically speaking, around 80% of New Year's resolutions fail in the first 6 weeks.

I also dared to set myself an ambitious goal this year - and failed miserably.

My plan was to try out 52 new recipes. The reality? It only turned out to be 8, but instead of judging myself, I learnt from it. I want to share these lessons with you. Because failure is part of growing.

Why resolutions often fail

It's actually a good idea to set yourself goals. But many New Year's resolutions fail because they are not realistic.

That's exactly what happened to me: My goal was well thought out - with identity anchoring, concrete plans and motivation - but it wasn't realisable. Meetings were cancelled, appointments were postponed and life got in the way.

What I have learnt from this:

  1. Do not judge yourself: Mistakes are learning opportunities. Ask instead: What was missing?
  2. Learning from mistakes: I'm setting a more realistic target for 2025: 12 new recipes. Anything more than that is a bonus!
  3. Start right away: Why wait? Take the first small step now! Instead of putting off a good resolution, you can start right away. Either tidy up or get fit straight away, for example, or take the first step, e.g. find a recipe or exercise programme, make a plan, enter appointments.

4. Motivation through success: Finish any unfinished projects from the old year. This will give you momentum for new things. For example, sort out a few more corners in your home. This will give you a healthy dose of pride: I can do what I want to do. This gives you motivation for new things.

Who do you want to be in 2025?

Do you want to be cheerful next year? Or deep? Or calm? Which identity do you want to strengthen?

14 days after the start of the year, 17 to 27 % of all New Year's resolutions are water under the bridge. Why is that? They often lack a connection to their own identity. Without this foundation, resolutions fizzle out like seeds on unprepared soil.

If you felt the same way: no problem. Just start again. Ask yourself:

Who do I want to be in 2025 (anymore)?

It's not about pretending to be something you're not. It's about strengthening what you already are.

This includes considering which part of your own personality you want to strengthen.

I asked myself this question. My answer: I want to become a deeper person - in my thoughts, actions and feelings. That's what I want:

  • Penetrate topics more deeply in coaching.
  • Grow emotionally and spiritually.
  • offers at Down to Earth - especially the Swing concept for life in balance
  • Strengthen my deep muscles.

What is your focus for 2025?

Think about which aspect of your identity you want to strengthen. Link your goals to your "Who do I want to be?". This makes your resolutions more powerful.

How can you achieve this?

Think about concrete steps that will bring you closer to your goal.

My plans look like this:

  • Do a training course on the brain and one on coaching.
  • Read books about emotions and coaching.
  • Explain the Swing concept better on the website and expand on specific offers.
  • Daily planking for the deep muscles.

Then get started right away. Here are my first steps:

  • Ordered a book by Brené Brown about feelings.
  • Searched for suitable further training programmes.
  • A round of planking done.

Ask yourself:

  • What are your next steps?
  • What is the first step you can take right now?

If you don't have time right now, set yourself a reminder. This will keep you on track.
