Business punk and business punker
According to the Bible, giving things a name was the first job of the newly created humans. What a beautiful beginning! It's a joy when you find a name that allows you to put into words the diversity of what you see: "Fat, round, big animal with a long tube hanging out of its face!" is a nice description, but being able to say "elephant" really makes life and communication with others easier.
I had such an elephantine experience - to re-use a word that used to do the rounds as a superlative in my youth - in a café just now. I came across the magazine "Business Punk" into your hands. The subtitle describes what it's all about: Work hard, play hard. For the non-Anglists among my readers: Work hard and enjoy life for all it's worth.
The magazine presents people who do not adhere to the classic rules of how "one" should run a company. Nonconformist "punks" who rebel: Against the pinstripe suit, which is just as rigid as the company's underlying business plan and working hours. What counts is the creativity, joy and energy with which new things are created. Also and gladly off the beaten track. Yet no less successful. In short: the business punks.
I am thrilled. About the people described there and what they achieve with energy, but also with playful joy. And happy to have finally found a term that describes me: Business punker.
Of course you don't do that: set up a publishing house without start-up capital - neither your own nor someone else's. Printing your first book digitally in small print runs and hoping that you'll sell enough of them at a seminar weekend to pay the printer's bill. Phew. It worked. Even well. We used the same strategy for the first video - 10 years ago it was still real tapes. And to finance the next idea bit by bit with the sales proceeds.
That's not how it's done - maybe it's true. You don't do it like that. You don't make mini books for your trouser pocket or handbag. I do. And then I'm surprised when they sell tens of thousands of copies. And I'm happy about every person who is enriched by them. And I'm happy that I've finally found a nice name to describe what I am: Business punker.
