300 trees for Afghanistan - or even more?
Over the last few days, the media have reported that 50 Afghans have been deported - to Afghanistan. To what is currently the fourth most dangerous country in the world.
It makes me cry. A few people have been able to avoid deportation - for example an Afghan who has been living in Germany for 21 years !!!! lives in Germany, works here, is married and has been the father of a child for 2 months.
Nevertheless, when I hear that people are being deported to a totally uncertain future, my heart breaks. As one of the richest countries in the world, can we not afford to give these 50 people refuge?
This makes the tree project all the more important to me. One fruit tree for a family may be like a drop in the ocean. But a drop and another drop and another and another brings change. We currently have the money for 300+ fruit trees. 300 families who will soon have an improved diet.
On the BLOG I have written more about the project.
In the photo are Udo Stolte, the director of Shelter, and his wife Sieglinde, whom I have known for over 25 years. They gave me a pomegranate because that is one of the types of fruit we will be planting there.
The project ends on Sunday evening.
I'm dreaming that we'll really get things moving in the final spurt... and get a total of 500 trees together.
Donate old D-Mark
By the way: An almost "free" way to support the project is to see if you still have any old Deutschmarks lying around somewhere. And to send them to me very quickly (to the address of Down to Earth. On Wednesday I will exchange the ones I already have into euros and use them for the project.
